Posted by: Online Sequencer - 06-01-2022, 07:08 AM - Forum: Events - Replies (80)

[Image: attachment.php?aid=215] Hello Online Sequencer! It's time to announce the 2022 June Monthly Contest!

This month we actually have 2 themes! The rules will be slightly different for this month because of it, so make sure to read them! For this month, make the best sequences you can using only warm (first theme) or only cool (second theme) colored instruments! A list of which instruments belong in which category can be found at the bottom of this post.

General Information

The entry period is from 6/1 ~ 6/21 (11:59 PM EST). Winners will be announced on 6/30/2022!

While we will post general notes on every contest, please refer to the Monthly Contest announcement thread for more details on Monthly Contests themselves.
  • Entry limit of 1 sequence per theme per person.
  • Committee members are allowed to enter the contests, but will not enter their example sequence nor will they vote for their own entry.
  • Sequences made prior to the current Monthly Contest are allowed, although entering the same sequence in different Monthly Contests is not. If you are unsure about whether or not you have entered a sequence in a previous monthly contest, a list of all the sequences that have been entered into previous monthly contests can be found here.
  • Making a remix of an existing song is allowed.
  • Editing an entry during the voting period (the 22nd through the end of the respective month EST) is strictly prohibited and will result in that entry being disqualified.
  • Collaborations on entries are allowed, but any points that the piece might receive are divided up equally between the contributors.
  • The standard Online Sequencer Rules will apply and any entries violating a rule will automatically be disqualified.
I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with. Good luck to you all!

[1/6] Opting Out of Monthly Contest Points
Posted by: Online Sequencer - 01-06-2022, 08:58 AM - Forum: Events - Replies (1)

[Image: attachment.php?aid=215] Hello Online Sequencer. After having gotten requests about this from multiple OS users over the past year, I'd like to announce something that's been in the works in the committee for the past couple of weeks. Starting today, users can opt out of receiving points from their Monthly Contest entries if they so choose. Here's how it will work:

Users can request to opt out of receiving points from the Monthly Contests. If they do, and one of their entries places in the top 3, then the points will be awarded to the next sequence in line, and that sequence's points will be awarded to the next sequence in line, etc.

In the event that the winning entry is a collaboration, only the users in the collab that did not opt out of points will receive their share of points. If all participants in the collab have opted out of points, then the points will be awarded as described in the previous paragraph.

In any given month, if 5 or more entries to a contest are from users who have opted out of points, or if there are multiple entries from users who have opted out of points that comprise 30% or more of all of the entries for that month, then a separate category will be made for those entries for that month. Only 1 winner will be chosen from this category, and no honorable mentions will be made for this category.

Users can opt out of points at any time, and users can opt back in to points at any time. However, users will NOT regain any points they would have earned while they were opting out when the opt back in. If a user opts out of points in the 1st through 21st of a month, it will take effect immediately. If a user opts out of points after the 21st of a month, it will not take effect until the next month.

The sequence that appears in the winning sequences playlist each year will be the winning sequence that has points awarded to it.

2021 Monthly Contest winners can also retroactively choose to opt out of the points gained from the yearly prize if they so choose.

Please note that this system is only tentative; it will be amended as necessary.

If you wish to opt out of or back in to receiving points from the Monthly Contest, please post a reply here stating that you want to opt out! By default, everyone is currently opting in to points. If you have previously requested to opt out of points before this post was made, please still post here.

Thank you to everyone who has read up to this point in the post! I want to have more of these blog posts made throughout the year, so I'll hopefully see you all there!

  Site Regulation Announcement
Posted by: LucentTear - 12-16-2021, 05:06 PM - Forum: News - Replies (26)

Hello everyone.

We've recently held a public discussion on Discord over how we can improve the community space inside website chat. We will now make conscious efforts to turn the Online Sequencer community into a more welcoming and thoughtfully engaging place to discuss music and other subfield topics.

There are two points I would like to touch base with—asking the community for help and introducing upcoming security features.

We need your support!

The current staff works hard to make sure the sequencer stays peaceful and to de-escalate issues that may occur. We also frequently reform the official rules to make sure they are relevant and up-to-date.

However, our efforts alone are not enough to change the kinds of interactions taking place on the chat. We cannot continue to hand out repercussions to misbehaving users and expect good behavior to come out of it.

Instead, we believe that promoting good behavior starts from the core of the community, and that we should slowly alter the way in which we communicate with others on a daily basis.

Our main goal is to reduce inappropriate content on the chat. This is a music community first and foremost and that conversation should ideally be about Online Sequencer or other music-related topics.

We are going to be more strict around sexual topics as they have no place on the site. From now on, please refrain and encourage others to refrain from using certain vocabulary on the chat. If you are unsure what "certain vocabulary" entails, please contact me and I will let you know what isn't allowed. Otherwise, we will now enforce a 30-minute mute policy every time someone mentions something inappropriate.

Moreover, if you feel that the chat is derailing, try to refocus the conversation topic back to Online Sequencer! This is the most effective method of calming the chat.

Quote:Here are some example topics to interject into the discussion:

- Ask about someone's favorite sequence.
- Talk about your favorite instrument combinations or site features.
- How did you first find about Online Sequencer?

It takes collective initiative to change the overall behavior of the community. If you enjoy using Online Sequencer, please support our cause! Be the person that you are willing to talk to and support each other!

Improved Security Measures

We occasionally add new security features to deter misconduct on the site. Our most notable updates include the 5-second chat cooldown and the 24-hour chat restriction for new accounts. These have helped in discouraging spam and preventing alt accounts from becoming problematic.

We have decided on these new features:

Quote:Additional Chat Restrictions
In addition to the 24-hour restriction...

- Users will be required to read the website rules before proceeding.

- Users will also be required to post a thread to the Introduce Yourself subforum.

- This will affect users who have joined before the update, but have not posted to this subforum. Please post a self-introduction in advance!

Other Quality of Life Updates
- The in-progress Vote Mute feature will let regular users use a chat command to mute a misbehaving user for 30 minutes after a specified vote count. The Vote Mute feature will also notify admins about the user similarly to the !911 command. We are still deciding on the number of votes required to successfully vote mute a user.

- We are also figuring out how to prevent muted users from whispering others on the site. The actual logistics are still unknown.

We hope that these upcoming features will improve community experience on the site. Happy sequencing!
